Town Government

Westport Island has a New England Town Meeting style of government. The Annual Town Meeting, held once a year in June, is the highest governing body of the town. At the town meeting, a "warrant" of all major budget decisions plus any proposed ordinances or major changes to town administration is presented to attendees to consider, discuss, and vote on in a live meeting format.

Between Annual Town Meetings, the elected Select Board makes the executive decisions to carry out the will of the Town Meeting. They appoint town officials and committee members, create committees as needed, and meet regularly to make decisions on spending requests and other matters.
