Public Land
Westport Island is lucky to have several conserved parcels of land available for public enjoyment. The town owns several parcels and the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (KELT) also owns a number of properties and easements. Beaver Pond Preserve:
Description: Forested area with pond. Easy to moderate hiking trail.
Directions: Take Main Rd. south 7 miles, left onto lower entrance of East Shore Rd. Trailhead is approximately 1 mile on the left.
Description: Forested areas, tidal cove, and point overlooking the Back River. Easy to moderate trails.
Directions: Take Main Rd. south 7.5 miles, right onto lower entrance of West Shore Rd. Trailhead is approximately 1 mile on the left.
Clough Point Preserve:
Description: Forested area, vernal pools, views of the Sheepscot River. Easy to moderate trails.
Directions: Take Main Rd. south 1/2 mile, left onto North End Rd. Trailhead is approximately 1 mile on the left.
Dunton Preserve:
Description: Forested area, views of Meadow Pond and Bog. Access is limited at the present time. No parking area or trails have been established.
Directions: Take Main Rd. south 6 miles, right onto Post Office Rd. Preserve is 1,000 feet on the left.
Greenleaf Cove Common Lot:
Description: 1- acre forested area, view of Greenleaf Cove & Sheepscot River, one steep trail to shore. Ramp and float are private.
Directions: Take Main Road south approximately 4 miles, left onto Oak Run Road. Follow Oak Run to the end (about 1/2 mile) and bear left at the fork and follow signs to parking space.
Description: Mixed forest and field, views of the Squam Creek estuary, historic sites.
Directions: Take Main Rd. south approximately 5 miles, right onto upper entrance of West Shore Rd. Trailhead is approximately 1/2 mile on the left.
Wright House & Landing:
Description: Public boat launch and float, parking lot, lawn area, building with history center and food pantry, jetty, wooded point , views overlooking Back River.
Take Main Rd. south approx. 1.5 miles, right onto Ferry Rd., follow to the end.
Yankee Bog:
Description: 17-acre Black Spruce bog and wetland. Access is limited at the present time. No parking or maintained trails.
Directions: Take Main Road south approximately 2 miles, left on Greenleaf Road. Right of way to bog is approximately 1000’ on your left, follow stone wall.
